In 1930s Ferrara, a wealthy Jewish family tries to hold on to a privileged life behind the walls of their estate.
They host friends for tennis and parties at the villa while, outside, Mussolini's government bans Jews from public life. A middle-class Jewish young man is in love with Micòl Finzi-Contini, who pursues forbidden experiences and gentile relationships. As antisemitism intensifies under Fascism, the family must finally face the horrors of the Holocaust, and the film follows them from the tennis courts to the waiting rooms where Jews await transport to the camps.
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The screening is followed by a conversation with Larry Levi, whose father survived the Holocaust in Italy, moderated by journalist Tom Teicholz.
